Episode Transcript
The title of the message tonight is "Riches and Righteousness."
00:00 --> 00:05
"Riches and Righteousness."
00:05 --> 00:09
In our study of the book of Proverbs, we've learned a lot about the different contrasts
00:09 --> 00:14
between people who walk the path of God and those who don't walk the path of God.
00:14 --> 00:19
And we'll probably continue to learn that throughout the book of Proverbs.
00:19 --> 00:24
But tonight's a little different.
00:24 --> 00:26
Tonight we won't be learning about the difference between the two different kinds of people,
00:26 --> 00:31
directly at least, but the two different kinds of possessions that people can have.
00:31 --> 00:39
There are essentially two types of possessions that we can acquire.
00:39 --> 00:42
And I want you to notice that I didn't say two types of possessions that we can possess.
00:42 --> 00:49
But I said acquire because before you can possess them, you must acquire them.
00:49 --> 00:55
Everybody comes out of the womb empty-handed, don't they?
00:55 --> 00:58
Everybody.
00:58 --> 00:59
What does a man have that he didn't first receive, the Bible says?
00:59 --> 01:05
We're literally born with nothing, not even a shirt on our back.
01:05 --> 01:10
We're born with nothing.
01:10 --> 01:13
And every possession that we'll ever have will be acquired in one of three ways.
01:13 --> 01:20
It'll be something we were given, something we earned, or something we stole.
01:20 --> 01:30
Every possession that you'll ever acquire will be acquired one of three ways.
01:30 --> 01:37
It'll be something that you were given, something you earned, or something you stole.
01:37 --> 01:46
So possessions fall into these two categories, so to speak,
01:46 --> 01:52
and all possessions are either given, earned, or stolen.
01:52 --> 01:58
Possessions are very important to us, aren't they?
01:58 --> 02:01
We keep locks in our doors to protect our possessions.
02:01 --> 02:05
And when we run out of space at the house, we rent storage units.
02:05 --> 02:11
I had a man I was talking to one day.
02:11 --> 02:14
He was a businessman, and he said, "I don't care where you build them.
02:14 --> 02:18
You build a storage unit."
02:18 --> 02:20
He said, "People will fill it up."
02:20 --> 02:22
That's what he told me.
02:22 --> 02:23
Why?
02:23 --> 02:24
They're possessions.
02:24 --> 02:26
And they'll rent storage units out, so they can hold more possessions.
02:28 --> 02:33
And most of our possessions fall into the first category here in verse 4.
02:33 --> 02:38
If you'll look in Proverbs 11 and 4, and that is the category of riches.
02:38 --> 02:43
Underscore the word riches, please.
02:43 --> 02:50
Now, if you'll go down a little bit further in the verse and underscore the word righteousness.
02:50 --> 02:56
Righteousness.
02:56 --> 02:58
That's Brother James walking in, if you all hear anything.
02:58 --> 03:01
Righteousness.
03:01 --> 03:03
So Solomon is talking about the difference between two types of possessions in this verse.
03:03 --> 03:10
Riches and righteousness.
03:10 --> 03:13
And following the order of the text, as the Holy Spirit gives us, we're first going to learn about riches.
03:13 --> 03:20
And Solomon says, "Ritches do something."
03:20 --> 03:24
Riches have a characteristic.
03:24 --> 03:26
Riches function in a certain way, particularly, if you look back in your text, riches profit.
03:26 --> 03:33
You see?
03:33 --> 03:34
They profit.
03:34 --> 03:36
And the Hebrew word translated profit means to ascend, means to go up.
03:36 --> 03:41
Does anybody follow the stock market at all?
03:41 --> 03:45
You follow a little bit?
03:45 --> 03:46
Anybody else?
03:46 --> 03:48
Me and my dad enjoy following the stock market.
03:48 --> 03:51
And if you own stock, you always want it to do what?
03:51 --> 03:58
You want it to ascend.
03:58 --> 04:00
You want it to go up.
04:00 --> 04:02
If you have a bank account, how many of you all follow your bank account?
04:02 --> 04:06
I hope everybody does that.
04:06 --> 04:10
But if you follow your bank account, you also want it to ascend.
04:10 --> 04:13
You want it to go up, not down.
04:13 --> 04:16
And that's what this Hebrew word translated profit means.
04:16 --> 04:21
Possessions are possessions.
04:21 --> 04:23
We can acquire possessions, but not all possessions are profitable.
04:23 --> 04:31
But all riches are.
04:31 --> 04:34
All riches profit.
04:34 --> 04:37
For something to be profitable, it has to be useful.
04:37 --> 04:41
That's part of profitable.
04:41 --> 04:43
In fact, this same Hebrew word profit, the word profit also means to be useful.
04:43 --> 04:51
And the reason is the value of our possessions is measured by the benefit that we receive from those possessions.
04:51 --> 05:00
If I save $50,000 in Monopoly money, then I have increased my possessions.
05:00 --> 05:09
But that money does not profit me.
05:09 --> 05:11
I've made no profit because it's not useful to me.
05:11 --> 05:16
Gossip is not profitable to me, but Bible truth is.
05:16 --> 05:22
I can acquire knowledge about something going on in one of y'all's houses.
05:22 --> 05:27
And that knowledge is not going to be useful to me.
05:27 --> 05:30
But if I acquire knowledge from God's word, that is going to be useful.
05:30 --> 05:34
So that knowledge that I acquired would be profitable.
05:34 --> 05:38
Acts chapter 20, verse 20, Acts chapter 20, verse 20, Paul said,
05:38 --> 05:43
I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you.
05:43 --> 05:48
In other words, if I had knowledge that would be useful to you in the kingdom of God, I did not hold it back.
05:48 --> 05:56
Jesus taught us that there are riches, profitable things that we can possess on earth.
05:56 --> 06:06
And then there are riches, profitable things that we can only possess as children of God.
06:06 --> 06:11
Both are riches, both are profitable.
06:11 --> 06:15
And earthly riches, don't ever think that they're not profitable because they are.
06:15 --> 06:22
And that's the riches that Solomon is talking about tonight.
06:22 --> 06:26
He's talking about riches, possessions that are profitable to us here on earth.
06:26 --> 06:32
And I thank God for those riches.
06:32 --> 06:36
Earthly riches allow us to enjoy a nice home.
06:36 --> 06:41
Earthly riches allow us to receive good medical care.
06:41 --> 06:46
Earthly riches allow us to eat well.
06:46 --> 06:51
Earthly riches allow us to live comfortably.
06:51 --> 06:54
Earthly riches provide us a sense of earthly security.
06:54 --> 07:00
Earthly riches are profitable to us, but they are only profitable for certain things.
07:00 --> 07:08
And they are only profitable for a certain period of time.
07:08 --> 07:13
That's the key.
07:13 --> 07:15
Riches profit not when it comes to aging.
07:15 --> 07:18
You can put all the cream you want to on your face.
07:18 --> 07:23
Drink all the plexus.
07:23 --> 07:26
It may give you a better quality of life, but you're still going to get old and die.
07:26 --> 07:34
Because all the money in the world is not going to keep us from dying.
07:34 --> 07:39
Riches profit not when it comes to love.
07:39 --> 07:43
Because you can't buy somebody's love and faithfulness.
07:43 --> 07:48
The richest woman in the world was married to the richest man in the world.
07:48 --> 07:55
And he learned that money couldn't keep her home.
07:55 --> 08:00
So she took his riches and left.
08:00 --> 08:05
But riches profit not when it comes to love.
08:05 --> 08:07
But most importantly, riches profit, look back in your text, not in the day of wrath.
08:07 --> 08:16
Riches profit not in the day of wrath.
08:16 --> 08:20
And notice that it is the day of wrath.
08:20 --> 08:27
Not a day of wrath, the day of wrath.
08:27 --> 08:30
We're talking about an exclusive, a specific day of wrath.
08:30 --> 08:38
I look at a calendar almost every day at work.
08:38 --> 08:42
I have to make schedule for everybody, and I have to keep up with schedules
08:42 --> 08:47
if people are going to be off to go to the doctor or do something else.
08:47 --> 08:51
We got court on a particular day.
08:51 --> 08:53
And I'm always looking at a calendar.
08:53 --> 08:56
And I get aggravated at some of the holidays that are put on these calendars,
08:56 --> 09:04
days that don't belong on there, in my opinion.
09:04 --> 09:08
But there's a particular day that's on God's calendar.
09:08 --> 09:15
He's the only one that has access to see that calendar.
09:15 --> 09:19
We can't see it.
09:19 --> 09:21
But it's on God's calendar, and that is the day of wrath, the day of wrath.
09:21 --> 09:28
For the past 6,000 years, the world has been counting down to this day of wrath.
09:28 --> 09:35
It's an actual day, an actual time, an actual occurrence.
09:35 --> 09:40
It is already written on God's calendar, and we're counting down
09:40 --> 09:46
every time you go to bed and you wake up the next day.
09:46 --> 09:49
We're one day closer to the day of wrath.
09:49 --> 09:52
This is a day when God no longer extends His patience and His mercy toward sinners.
09:52 --> 10:01
It's the day when Christ will sit on His throne as the judge of all the world.
10:01 --> 10:07
The Psalms talk about this day.
10:07 --> 10:11
The prophets talk about this day.
10:11 --> 10:15
And as you can tell, the proverbs talk about this day.
10:15 --> 10:20
When you get into the New Testament, it talks about it some more.
10:20 --> 10:25
But it's when Christ will sit on His throne as the judge of all the world,
10:25 --> 10:29
and guilty sinners will be condemned forever in His wrath against them.
10:29 --> 10:37
That's the day of wrath.
10:37 --> 10:39
It's Judgment Day.
10:39 --> 10:43
The day of wrath is a specific time, once again, that's already set on God's calendar.
10:43 --> 10:49
If you'll write down in your notes or your margin, Acts 17, verse 31,
10:49 --> 10:59
talking about this being a specific day that's already set on God's calendar.
10:59 --> 11:04
Acts 17, 31 says, "Because He hath appointed a day."
11:04 --> 11:11
That means God has taken His calendar,
11:11 --> 11:14
and He has appointed a certain day in which He will judge the world in...
11:14 --> 11:21
If you have your Bibles open to that, righteousness.
11:21 --> 11:24
If not, make a middle note in your mind or in your notes.
11:24 --> 11:26
He will judge the world and sit with Me.
11:26 --> 11:29
Righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained,
11:29 --> 11:33
whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.
11:33 --> 11:39
You can't hold court if the judge is dead.
11:39 --> 11:42
God has raised the judge from the dead,
11:42 --> 11:45
and that is the one that God has appointed to judge the world,
11:45 --> 11:51
and God has appointed a day when court's going to be held.
11:51 --> 11:59
And Jesus will judge the world, once again, very important, in righteousness.
11:59 --> 12:05
Man, I just love how seamless the Old and New Testament is.
12:05 --> 12:08
Now, the day of wrath will occur when Christ returns.
12:08 --> 12:15
So, when we're talking about the day of wrath,
12:15 --> 12:18
it's not a specific day where God says, "Okay, on this day, day of wrath."
12:18 --> 12:26
But what is the day of wrath to a particular group of people
12:26 --> 12:34
is not the day of wrath to another group of people, okay?
12:34 --> 12:40
But it is the day of wrath, the day of wrath.
12:40 --> 12:45
So, God's appointed this day, and this day of wrath will occur when Christ returns.
12:45 --> 12:50
When Jesus returns, the Lord Jesus will raise the dead.
12:50 --> 12:57
When the Word of God was preached unto them,
12:57 --> 13:02
and they hardened their hearts against God, they wouldn't repent,
13:02 --> 13:10
those people are going to be raised.
13:10 --> 13:12
Now, when we talk about a day, it's not necessarily a 24-hour day.
13:12 --> 13:16
It's talking about a period of time.
13:16 --> 13:20
It's not like the creative day, the evening and the morning, or the first day.
13:20 --> 13:25
It's never said about the day of the Lord.
13:25 --> 13:28
But when the Lord Jesus returns,
13:28 --> 13:30
there's going to be a series of events that takes place,
13:30 --> 13:32
and one of these events is going to be the resurrection of the unbelievers.
13:32 --> 13:38
They're going to be raised.
13:38 --> 13:40
They're going to be judged.
13:40 --> 13:43
It'll be a day of wrath.
13:43 --> 13:47
And they are people who hardened their hearts at God's Word,
13:47 --> 13:52
and they would not repent.
13:52 --> 13:56
Romans 2, verse 5 says,
13:56 --> 14:02
"But speaking to the unbelievers, speaking to the person who is appointed to this day of wrath,
14:02 --> 14:08
he says, 'But after thy hardness and impenitent, non-repentant heart,
14:08 --> 14:14
treasurest up unto thyself wrath against,' here it is, the day of wrath.
14:14 --> 14:23
Now, the day of wrath that the Apostle Paul is speaking of in Romans, chapter 2,
14:23 --> 14:27
is the same day of wrath that Solomon is speaking of in Proverbs, chapter 11.
14:27 --> 14:32
And so Paul in Romans, chapter 2, is telling the hard-hearted person, someone who's like Pharaoh,
14:32 --> 14:38
doesn't matter what you tell them, they're not going to have anything to do with God.
14:38 --> 14:42
They're not going to confess their sin.
14:42 --> 14:44
They're not going to receive his son.
14:44 --> 14:46
They're not going to acknowledge God as their creator, and Jesus as the Savior he sent.
14:46 --> 14:49
Not going to happen.
14:49 --> 14:52
And so Paul is saying, okay, that type of person, when they resist God's Word,
14:52 --> 15:00
and they refuse like Pharaoh, they harden their heart, they refuse to listen to God's Word,
15:00 --> 15:06
they're treasuring up wrath.
15:06 --> 15:09
They're putting wrath in the bank, storing, heaping up more wrath as they live
15:09 --> 15:18
throughout their lives against the day of wrath.
15:18 --> 15:22
In other words, this wrath is stored up until the day of wrath,
15:22 --> 15:27
and then all the wrath that's been stored up because God's angry at them.
15:27 --> 15:33
He holds his peace. He gives them time to repent.
15:33 --> 15:37
He waits until this day of wrath when the world's going to be judged.
15:37 --> 15:40
But it's stored up. It's not going anywhere.
15:40 --> 15:45
And so on the day of wrath, those people are going to be judged,
15:45 --> 15:51
and all of their hard-heartedness and all of their unrepentance
15:51 --> 15:56
and all their bullheadedness and rebellion against God,
15:56 --> 16:00
all that wrath is going to be poured out on them.
16:00 --> 16:05
Romans 2.5, "But after thy hardness and impenitent heart
16:05 --> 16:09
treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation,"
16:09 --> 16:17
look here now of the what kind of judgment?
16:17 --> 16:20
Righteous judgment of God.
16:20 --> 16:23
Remember, Christ is going to judge the world in what? Righteousness.
16:23 --> 16:28
And now here in Romans 2, Paul says that, and again, a different writer,
16:28 --> 16:35
but the same Holy Spirit still teaching about the day of wrath.
16:35 --> 16:39
And he says it's going to be a righteous judgment.
16:39 --> 16:43
And being a righteous judgment, these people are going to be unrighteous,
16:43 --> 16:48
and so they get wrath.
16:48 --> 16:53
Every time God gives someone an opportunity to repent
16:53 --> 16:56
and they harden their hearts, they mock the preaching of God's Word,
16:56 --> 16:59
they try to go in and like that man and shoot a pastor
16:59 --> 17:04
and they hate Christians, they're treasuring up the wrath of God.
17:04 --> 17:09
They're storing up greater condemnation against themselves.
17:09 --> 17:13
"And in the day of God's wrath, no amount of earthly riches will profit them."
17:13 --> 17:21
Money may have gotten them a long way when they were here on earth,
17:21 --> 17:25
if they were rich, but it's not going to get them anywhere on the day of wrath.
17:25 --> 17:31
They won't be able to buy, bribe, influence, intimidate the judge of all the earth.
17:31 --> 17:43
They won't be able to hide from the judge of all the earth.
17:43 --> 17:47
It won't be any place they can go hide.
17:47 --> 17:51
When Christ returns, sinners will be dispossessed of all their earthly riches.
17:51 --> 17:59
They possess the riches, but they don't own the riches
17:59 --> 18:03
because everything belongs to God.
18:03 --> 18:07
And everything is given to us for the brief time that we have here on this earth
18:07 --> 18:12
as our possessions.
18:12 --> 18:14
We're merely stewards of those possessions,
18:14 --> 18:17
and then when we die, we give those possessions up.
18:17 --> 18:22
But they're going to be dispossessed of all their earthly riches.
18:22 --> 18:25
They may live again, but they won't be able to reclaim what previously belonged to them,
18:25 --> 18:33
and they will stand before God without them to be judged by His holy law.
18:33 --> 18:40
And God's holy law demands that the guilty sinner be condemned,
18:40 --> 18:46
so their riches will not profit them.
18:46 --> 18:49
"In the day of wrath, riches do not profit," look back in your text,
18:49 --> 18:54
"but righteousness delivereth."
18:54 --> 18:57
If you have your Bibles open, underscore the word "righteousness."
18:57 --> 19:00
We've heard that, haven't we?
19:00 --> 19:03
Christ is going to judge the world in righteousness.
19:03 --> 19:07
He is going to have a righteous judgment.
19:07 --> 19:11
Righteousness is the condition of being right before God,
19:11 --> 19:17
being right in His eyes, being right according to His law.
19:17 --> 19:23
And being counted as righteous in God's eyes delivers.
19:23 --> 19:28
Why? Because if God is going to, if Jesus, if God through Christ,
19:28 --> 19:33
is going to judge the world in righteousness,
19:33 --> 19:36
then those who are righteous will be judged as righteous.
19:36 --> 19:41
Won't be any wrath. God's not angry at righteousness, is He?
19:41 --> 19:46
If it's going to be a righteous judgment, then the righteous will sell through it.
19:46 --> 19:54
So, "riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
19:54 --> 19:57
but righteousness delivers from that day of wrath."
19:57 --> 20:06
Being righteous in God's eyes, it delivers what?
20:06 --> 20:10
Look back in your text, it delivers from death. From death.
20:10 --> 20:16
Now, the word "delivers," if you're taking notes, in the Hebrew,
20:16 --> 20:20
it means to be snatched away.
20:20 --> 20:23
Man, this is good. It means to be snatched away.
20:23 --> 20:29
Righteousness snatches us away from death.
20:29 --> 20:35
Righteousness, now, death is the result, here, let me put it to you in order.
20:35 --> 20:42
Wrath is the result of unrighteousness.
20:42 --> 20:46
Death is the result of God's wrath.
20:46 --> 20:49
In God's wrath, on account of our unrighteousness, He will say,
20:49 --> 20:53
"Depart from me, you work as an equity. I never knew you."
20:53 --> 20:56
And He is going to condemn. This will be the second death,
20:56 --> 21:00
the book of the Revelation calls it.
21:00 --> 21:02
Righteousness spares us from God's wrath.
21:02 --> 21:07
On the opposite end, it gains God's approval,
21:07 --> 21:11
and thus it snatches us away from death.
21:11 --> 21:16
So, unrighteousness delivers us to death.
21:16 --> 21:23
Righteousness delivers us from death.
21:23 --> 21:27
Say it again. Unrighteousness delivers us to death.
21:27 --> 21:32
Righteousness delivers us from death.
21:32 --> 21:35
Unrighteousness causes God to be angry with me.
21:35 --> 21:39
That's the day of wrath.
21:39 --> 21:41
Righteousness causes God to be pleased with me,
21:41 --> 21:46
and thus the day of wrath, for the unrighteous,
21:46 --> 21:52
becomes the day of salvation for the righteous.
21:52 --> 21:56
The day of deliverance for the righteous.
21:56 --> 21:59
So, at Christ's return, the unrighteous will experience
21:59 --> 22:07
the wrath of God and the second death.
22:07 --> 22:11
The righteous will experience this snatching away,
22:11 --> 22:16
this deliverance from death, this salvation from death,
22:16 --> 22:20
and eternal life.
22:20 --> 22:22
Just as God has appointed the day of wrath for the unrighteous,
22:22 --> 22:27
so God has appointed the same day as the day of salvation for the righteous.
22:27 --> 22:32
1 Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 9.
22:32 --> 22:38
1 Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 9 and 10 says,
22:38 --> 22:43
"For God hath not appointed," listen to this now.
22:43 --> 22:48
There's that word appointed.
22:48 --> 22:50
God has appointed a day in which Christ will judge the world in righteousness.
22:50 --> 22:57
The unrighteous will receive God's wrath and experience death.
22:57 --> 23:03
But God, it says, "hath not appointed us to wrath,
23:03 --> 23:08
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."
23:08 --> 23:13
I'm going to repeat that again in verse 9, where we move to verse 10.
23:13 --> 23:16
And I want to listen to the inflection of my voice.
23:16 --> 23:19
"For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
23:19 --> 23:23
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."
23:23 --> 23:28
God appointed a day in which He would judge the world in righteousness
23:28 --> 23:32
by that one man whom He raised from the dead.
23:32 --> 23:36
So through the person of Jesus Christ,
23:36 --> 23:39
God has appointed the unrighteous to have wrath.
23:39 --> 23:44
Through that same man, the Lord Jesus Christ,
23:44 --> 23:47
God has not appointed us to wrath,
23:47 --> 23:49
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.
23:49 --> 23:52
The same man, the same judge, the same day.
23:52 --> 23:58
One group experiences judgment unto death.
23:58 --> 24:03
The other group experiences judgment unto life.
24:03 --> 24:08
Watch the difference.
24:08 --> 24:09
One group is unrighteous, wrath, death.
24:09 --> 24:12
The other group is righteous, pleasure, and everlasting life.
24:12 --> 24:18
When Jesus came up out of that water in the river Jordan, He was righteous.
24:18 --> 24:23
He said, He told John, "Suffer to be so, for we must fulfill all righteousness."
24:23 --> 24:30
And when He came up out of the water, God the Father didn't say,
24:30 --> 24:33
"This is my Son in whom I am really angry."
24:33 --> 24:37
He said, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased."
24:37 --> 24:41
For God had not appointed us to wrath,
24:41 --> 24:47
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us.
24:47 --> 24:55
That whether we wake, that means whether we're alive or asleep,
24:55 --> 24:59
or whether we're dead, when that day comes,
24:59 --> 25:03
we should live together with Him.
25:03 --> 25:07
Man, that's good.
25:07 --> 25:12
Now, this righteousness that we have is obtained by faith.
25:12 --> 25:22
Romans chapter 3 verse 21, "Righteousness delivers from death."
25:22 --> 25:28
How is this righteousness obtained?
25:28 --> 25:30
Remember, there's only three ways to acquire this possession.
25:30 --> 25:37
Earned, stolen, or given?
25:37 --> 25:44
One of the three.
25:44 --> 25:46
Romans chapter 3 verse 21 through 26,
25:46 --> 25:49
"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested."
25:49 --> 25:53
The only people who are going to be able to stand before God
25:53 --> 25:57
and be delivered from death through righteousness
25:57 --> 26:01
are those who have the righteousness of God.
26:01 --> 26:07
The only people who have the righteousness of God
26:07 --> 26:09
are those who obtain it, how?
26:09 --> 26:11
Without the law.
26:11 --> 26:13
You see that? Is that still up there?
26:13 --> 26:15
The righteousness of God, that's what you have to have
26:15 --> 26:18
to be delivered from death on the day of wrath.
26:18 --> 26:21
The only way to have it is without the law.
26:21 --> 26:25
And God has manifested, see that word manifested?
26:25 --> 26:28
God has manifested the way in which we can obtain
26:28 --> 26:33
the righteousness of God without obeying the law.
26:33 --> 26:36
He's manifested it to us.
26:36 --> 26:38
How's He manifested it to us?
26:38 --> 26:40
In the gospel.
26:40 --> 26:42
How do we receive the righteousness of God without the law?
26:42 --> 26:46
Through that ban, God has ordained to judge the world in righteousness.
26:46 --> 26:50
Being witnessed by the law and the prophets,
26:50 --> 26:53
the law bore witness to the fact that there had to be righteousness without the law.
26:53 --> 27:00
How did the law bear witness to the fact that there has to be a righteousness without the law?
27:00 --> 27:05
You would think the law would be bragging on itself and saying,
27:05 --> 27:08
"No, you need me for righteousness."
27:08 --> 27:10
But the law itself told us we could not obtain righteousness by the law.
27:10 --> 27:16
There has to be a righteousness without it.
27:16 --> 27:19
That's why the same God that gave the 10 commandments through Moses,
27:19 --> 27:23
also upon giving those 10 commandments, gave a high priest to make a sacrifice
27:23 --> 27:29
on the day of atonement to put blood on the mercy seat
27:29 --> 27:32
so God could look at that blood and be pleased.
27:32 --> 27:36
Righteousness without the law.
27:36 --> 27:38
Righteousness through a substitute.
27:38 --> 27:40
Who died for us?
27:40 --> 27:42
Verse 10, we just looked at in Romans 3, 21.
27:42 --> 27:45
Who died for us?
27:45 --> 27:47
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested
27:47 --> 27:50
being witnessed by the law and the prophets.
27:50 --> 27:53
Isaiah 53, all we like sheep have gone astray.
27:53 --> 27:56
We've turned everyone to his own way.
27:56 --> 27:58
And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
27:58 --> 28:02
Verse 22, even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ.
28:02 --> 28:09
The righteousness of God is acquired by faith,
28:09 --> 28:13
and that righteousness comes from Jesus Christ.
28:13 --> 28:18
That's who it comes from.
28:18 --> 28:22
And it's unto all and upon all them that what?
28:22 --> 28:28
Believe, for there is no difference,
28:28 --> 28:32
for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,
28:32 --> 28:35
being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
28:35 --> 28:46
Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood.
28:46 --> 28:50
Not the blood of the goat on the day of atonement,
28:50 --> 28:53
but his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins.
28:53 --> 29:00
Isn't that great? Not your righteousness, not my righteousness,
29:00 --> 29:05
but the righteousness of Jesus.
29:05 --> 29:08
His obedience to the law, not ours, in that puts away our sins.
29:08 --> 29:17
He says for the remission of sins that are passed, for the forbearance of God,
29:17 --> 29:21
to declare, I say at this time, his righteousness, that he that is God might be just.
29:21 --> 29:27
That may just meaning he will never ever, ever bend on the requirements of his law.
29:27 --> 29:34
He's going to hold those requirements. He's going to be just,
29:34 --> 29:36
yet at the same time, the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
29:36 --> 29:41
I'm going to be just. I am going to judge Abigail strictly by my commandments.
29:41 --> 29:47
I'm not going to cut her any slack.
29:47 --> 29:49
But because she believes in Jesus,
29:49 --> 29:52
I'll apply the strict obedience that Jesus had to my law to Abigail's account.
29:52 --> 29:57
So I'll be just at the same time.
29:57 --> 29:59
I'll be the justifier of her who believes in Jesus.
29:59 --> 30:03
My goodness, that's good.
30:03 --> 30:05
Righteousness delivers from death.
30:05 --> 30:08
The word delivers again, the Hebrew means to snatch away.
30:08 --> 30:13
Now, that's what Jesus is going to do when he comes.
30:13 --> 30:19
He's going to snatch away the righteous to deliver them from the wrath
30:19 --> 30:25
that the unbelieving world will receive.
30:25 --> 30:28
This snatching away is commonly referred to as what? The rapture.
30:28 --> 30:35
The rapture is not a biblical word.
30:35 --> 30:37
It's not a word in the Bible.
30:37 --> 30:39
It's a word used to describe this snatching away,
30:39 --> 30:43
which is here in the Old Testament.
30:43 --> 30:45
We're reading about the rapture in the Old Testament.
30:45 --> 30:48
1 Thessalonians 4, verse 16 through 17.
30:48 --> 30:51
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
30:51 --> 30:54
with the voice of the archangel,
30:54 --> 30:56
and with the trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first."
30:56 --> 31:00
That's the righteous.
31:00 --> 31:01
"Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up,"
31:01 --> 31:06
caught up is the word,
31:06 --> 31:08
"together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air,
31:08 --> 31:11
and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
31:11 --> 31:12
The Greek word translated "caught up" means to catch away.
31:12 --> 31:17
Catch away, snatch away. It's the same thing.
31:17 --> 31:20
The day of wrath is a day the believers in Christ will be snatched away,
31:20 --> 31:25
caught up into the clouds.
31:25 --> 31:28
They'll be snatched away from eternal death,
31:28 --> 31:32
for they shall not perish but have everlasting life.
31:32 --> 31:35
Now, I'll close, and I do not have the Scripture in the slides.
31:35 --> 31:40
It came to me before church while I was back there in my study
31:40 --> 31:46
just a few minutes ago.
31:46 --> 31:49
But again, I told you that all possessions are acquired one of three ways.
31:49 --> 31:54
They're either going to be earned by you, they're going to be given to you,
31:54 --> 31:58
they're going to be stolen by you.
31:58 --> 32:00
And righteousness is by grace, righteousness is by faith,
32:00 --> 32:07
but I couldn't help but remember that precious Scripture
32:07 --> 32:10
that really nails it down.
32:10 --> 32:13
Again, earned, stolen, or given.
32:13 --> 32:19
And the Bible says that there's only one way
32:19 --> 32:22
that the righteousness of God can be acquired, and that's as a gift.
32:22 --> 32:27
Romans chapter 5 verse 17, if you're taking notes, says,
32:27 --> 32:30
"For if by one man's offense death reigned by one much more,
32:30 --> 32:35
they which receive abundance of grace," listen now,
32:35 --> 32:39
"and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ."
32:39 --> 32:51
The only way, don't you let anybody tell you
32:51 --> 32:56
that you've got to do a certain amount of work,
32:56 --> 32:58
that you've got to be committed, that you've got to do A, B, C, and D.
32:58 --> 33:02
Earned, stolen, or received as a gift is the only way.
33:02 --> 33:08
And the Bible says it is the righteousness of Jesus, not yours.
33:08 --> 33:13
It's the righteousness of God, not yours.
33:13 --> 33:16
It's acquired by faith.
33:16 --> 33:19
It's received as a gift, the gift of righteousness by one man,
33:19 --> 33:27
and one man only, not you, not me, but him, the one who died for us.
33:27 --> 33:37
"Thou, Father, we thank you so much for your precious word.
33:37 --> 33:40
Thank you, Father, that riches profit not in the day of wrath,
33:40 --> 33:44
but righteousness delivers from death."
33:44 --> 33:47
Hallelujah!
33:47 --> 33:49
Thank you for the gift of righteousness that's received by faith,
33:49 --> 33:55
believing the truth of what Christ has done.
33:55 --> 34:01
He obeyed the law.
34:01 --> 34:04
He was the atonement.
34:04 --> 34:06
He shed the blood.
34:06 --> 34:09
And by faith in his blood, it's a propitiation for our sins.
34:09 --> 34:14
In his precious name we thank you. Amen.
34:14 --> 34:18
Yes, sir. Oh, we've got a poem.
34:18 --> 34:21
"Ritches reward but rot in due course.
34:21 --> 34:44
The earthy man holds them what treasure he hath,
34:44 --> 34:48
but soon he will only know sorrow and loss,
34:48 --> 34:53
his profitless riches of flame in God's wrath.
34:53 --> 34:58
O righteous man seek the riches of one,
34:58 --> 35:02
whose head found no pillow nor foxhole did own,
35:02 --> 35:06
yet gaveth he righteousness to poor ones like me,
35:06 --> 35:10
that riches eternal would be mine for free."
35:10 --> 35:14
Oh, that's wonderful.
35:14 --> 35:16
It reminds me, since it's a gift, those riches can't buy it.
35:16 --> 35:22
Isn't that good? Man, thank you for the poem, Brother Shepherd.
35:22 --> 35:26
Praise God. Amen.
35:26 --> 35:29
